Family Tip | What to Wear for Family Pictures
The #1 question I get asked when it comes to family portraits IS …
“What Should We Wear?”
I like to keep things as simple and streamlined as possible. So I’ve narrowed it down to 5 super easy tips for a guaranteed photo-ready wardrobe 🙂
1. DRESS UP
Dress up for family pictures! If you want to go formal, do it! These pictures will be hanging up on your walls, displayed at grandparents’ homes, and looked back at for generations-to-come. Take it a step – or two – above your everyday wardrobe.
2. AVOID DISTRACTING CLOTHING
Don’t wear clothing that has big logos, lots of writing, or images on it. Logos and writing on clothing distracts from the image.
3. CHOOSE COMPLIMENTARY COLORS
Pick out one main color and then add accent colors that are complimentary! I suggest starting with one outfit that you absolutely love, and then adding in the others to coordinate with that first outfit. Use different tones/shades of colors and some patterns to add variety. Textures photograph so beautifully. Be careful to not add too many patterns though as it can get busy and distracting in pictures with a lot of patterns.
4. ACCESORIZE
Adding accessories like hats, bows, watches, belts, jewelry, suspenders, scarves, and jackets makes the picture more personal to each person in the family. It also adds textures and layers and creates more visual interest!
5. WEAR CLOTHING YOU ARE COMFORTABLE IN
If it isn’t something you would normally wear or that you feel comfortable in, don’t wear it. Pay attention to anything you are self conscious about. If you are nervous about your arms, wear a 3/4 sleeve or long sleeve shirt or jacket. If you are worried about your legs, wear long pants or a long dress. If you’re comfortable and yourself, you are going to have a lot more fun at your session and love your images!
