Lifestyle Newborn Sessions vs Posed Newborns: What’s the Difference?

LIFESTYLE NEWBORN SESSIONS vs POSED NEWBORNS
WHICH SESSION IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

One of the most common questions I get asked when it comes to newborn sessions is: What’s the difference between a lifestyle newborn session and a posed newborn session? That’s a great question. I’m about to break it down for you 🙂 These sessions are quite different from each other.

LIFESTYLE NEWBORN SESSIONS

Lifestyle newborn sessions are all about the baby AND your family. These sessions are a perfect way to capture your brand new addition and the family interacting with your baby in a relaxed, authentic way. These sessions can be done in your home. They can be shot in your family room, the babies nursery, or any other special place that is meaningful to you.

Lifestyle newborn sessions can also be done in my photography studio, where there’s beautiful furniture, neutral tones, and I have control over the lighting to create the perfect set. I want my clients to pick in-home or studio sessions depending on what they feel fits their family best! If you are in love with your home and want to document the memories of bringing your baby home, that’s amazing! If you want to have the perfect lighting and neutral backgrounds, a studio is a perfect option! No matter which location you choose, these images will be special to you.

Siblings, pets, and parents all do great in a lifestyle situation because it feels so … normal. I have you interact with your baby in natural ways that allows us to capture priceless, REAL moments. No posing of the baby is done during these sessions. That means that baby is swaddled in a blanket or wearing a cute little outfit, and the baby is being held or laying on a bed or in a crib. Lifestyle sessions do not include any shots of the baby with props such as baskets, buckets, blanket backdrops, etc.

POSED NEWBORN SESSIONS

Have you ever seen those darling photos where the baby is in a basket with their hands tucked under their chin? Or they are sleeping sweetly, wrapped up on a gorgeous fabric backdrop? These are posed newborn photos, and they are priceless! Posed newborn sessions require a lot of skill, time, and patience, which is why they are priced higher than lifestyle newborn sessions. I love these sessions because they are unique and artistic. These photos are something you’re only able to get when your baby is tiny and posable.  I have tons of newborn backdrops, props, baskets, headbands, and props at my studio, so we are able to create stunning setups just for your little one.

I offer posed mini newborn sessions, and full newborn sessions. Mini newborn sessions are the ideal choice if you are wanting just a few, individual, photos of your baby. Full newborn sessions are the way to go if you want a good variety of individual photos of your baby, and photos of your baby with their sibling(s) or their pet. Posed newborn sessions are only done in studio because that is where all of my lighting equipment and props are located. If you love artsy, posed, prop styled images, these sessions are for you!

THE HEATHER LARSEN FULL NEWBORN + FAMILY SESSION

If you’re like me, you LOVE posed newborn photos, but you also love lifestyle family photos. When I got my own baby’s newborn photos done, I was torn because I wanted both type of sessions. But I wasn’t able to find a photographer that offered both in the same session. That prompted me to create the perfect newborn package. My Full Newborn + Family session includes posed newborn photos, posed family photos, and lifestyle family photos.

This is my most popular package because my clients are able to get the best of both! Full newborn + family session are only done in studio because that is where all of my lighting equipment and props are located. These sessions include: ~2 hours of studio time, 2-3 wrapped/unwrapped posed newborn setups (with props), individual photos of baby and photos of baby with siblings, family, pets, etc. 50+ professionally edited photos are delivered to you via a personal, online digital gallery.
